I think I’m half way there…then again maybe not

ok so here are my first ten pages of my 20 pager scanned and what I think to be done. anyways because I wasn’t in class I am unsure of them so give me some comments if you have the time.

My book is going to a book about the number twenty and the transition my of acquired from the time I was born til now. So it is everything I know about the number 20 in the order that I learned it. I think its a good idea if I’m on the wrong track let me know.

My Thoughts on the Vamp and Tramp website

The Vamp and Tramp website is owened by Bill and Vicky Stewart of Birmingham, AL. Being book collectors them selves, they really know the value of a book. On thier site they split up all of the books by catiagorys such as, New Arrivals, Fine Press and Artist Books, Broadsides, Miniature Books, Resource Books, and thier newest online catalog Last Copy Books. In this new catalog of Last Copys they feature books such as Miriam Schaer’s Book “We are Happy To Serve You” In this book, Schaer writes about her four day career as a waitress after completing art school. the book uses an apran as a cover. this book seems really interesting and I even thought about buying it…until i saw the price!!! because this is the last copy ever Vamp and Tramp is selling it for $700.00!!! yes i said it 700 bucks! I never knew that just a book could cost that much!  Then as I was looking through some of the other books, I found that this price was about average! (p.s. I’m not sure if its me ofr if this type looks funny, sadly I don’t know how to fix it) Then I thought to myself, maybe it is just because they are last copys, so I when to look at the artist book section  and was shocked to find that there was not much difference in the prices here eather! wow I never knew that one could actualy make a career out of this! I just thought that book arts was something MIAD made up so that they could make another ellective course! So in visiting Vamp and Tramp I found that, Book Arts is not something made up by MIAD and that people will pay wayyy to much money on a book. so that was my take on it, comment if you disagree.

We waste no time in this class

and as for the next assignment we are to complete a 20 page book of scans, last week we did a pre-critic (which I wasn’t there for and am praying that I am on the right track with this thing). seeing as how it has to be 20 pages, a transformation and a self-portrait. I had so major thinking to do.

here are some pages from my notebook!

page1page2page3page4page5page6

my atered book

the lace edge on bottom is hand cut

I was extremely pleased at how the cover turned out, however I had difficulty with glueing the two vary thick pieces of paper togather. I am not sure what I coulod have done differently to make it a smoother process.

making the cake

the carving is done all by hand and painted with gold acrylic paint

the carving was not as hard as i though it would be, nor was the painting process. I was a little bumed that after painting the pages I had to thumb through each page so they wouldn’t stick togather.

letter press

the colophon was made using the MIAD press

My Colophon was my letterpress requirement for this project.  In doing this i expreiansed some problems dealing with letter shortage but made it work. another issue I was drying time. I never know that letterpress took so long to dry and even when you think that it is dry, well it’s not. I found out in my final critic that a good letterpress has to dry for a whole week!!!! crazy! anyways so that explaines the smuges on there.

sliding cover

this pic demonstrates the sliding cover

this aspect of the book was fairly simple, however in the final critic, it was suggested that the folded recipes be made of a higher quality paper, I agreed, but went far beyond my price rage on the cover paper alone. If I had unlimited founding this book would be amazing! lol

altered book

thats all folks!

Altered Book assignment 3

So i Have starting working on my final altered book. the carving of the cake in the middle seems to be going well, i have learned a thing or two about exacto knifes and puncher wounds but hey its cool i guess lol. anyways like i said its going good so far. i finished the carving last night and i plan on painting the edges of the outside pages gold. i am still unsure if I should paint the cake white or leave it the way they are (I kind of like the way it looks now)

then is like i am going to meet with Leslie today to figure out how to construct that sweat sliding cover of mine. one problem i have is figuring out what type of paper i will use, and where to get it. I also can’t spend a lot of money on it because, well i don’t have much to spend! ah the life of a college student :)

I am not by a scanner now but next post i will post more pages from the notebook and pictures of both my mock up copy and my final project so far.
