final book proposal

FINAL BOOK PROJECT
EDITION OF 20

NAME: Lea Gonzales

A brief summary of the project. (3/4 sentences.)

In my next assignment I plan on doing a book about a poem about stairs.  The book will be titled “I saw a man who wasn’t there”.  It will be in a pop up book and include a poem by William Hugnes Mearns.

1.    A detailed description of the proposed book, describing:
•    Background (Research)
After reading the Smith text book and looking at the endless options, I ran into a book My Twelve Steps by Emily Martin (89 smith) I really loved the stair affect it gave and it reminded me of a poem I heard by Mearns.

•    Description of text
The text in my book will be simple and to the point.  The text will be the first few lines of the poem.  I feel that these lines tell a clear story.  I want the text to be a darker color forcing the reader to get uncomfortably close to this book to really portray that eerie feeling of a ghost that is watching you. The text will be printed on a colored paper on a computer.

•    Description of imagery
In my book the stairs will be poping out at you and there will a shadow of the stairs on the floor and a shadow of a man on the stair case. The shadows will be prodused by acrylic paint and stencils, from which I have hand made.

•    Description of composition/physical description/structure (including: sheet size, printing process used, typeface, binding, number of pages)
When the book is closed the cover will be all that is visible.  The cover of each book will be 9.5 inches tall by 7 inches wide. It will be covered with book cloth and be composed of book board. On the inside there will be a sheet of black paper to cover the board on the inside.  The pop up stairs will be made using one piece of 8.5inch by 11 inch card stock paper in a darker color.

•    Description of how the artist intends to produce the book
To produce the book I will cut out the book board to the desired size, then I will measure and cut out the book cloth then glue the board and the cloth together. After folding the cloth over the egdes and gluing them down then I will let it dry for a few hours. Once it is dry then I will glue the black paper on the inside of the book and let that dry. Then I will find the center of the cardstock paper and draw a line then I will draw half inch by 4.5 inch rectagles in a decending fashion. I will then cut the langth of these to make them pop out and fold them so that they form stairs. I will then cut the stairs out and glue them onto the black paper on the inside. After that is dry I will apply my stencil to the front inside cover so the man appers to be sitting on the step.  Then I will paint on the black acrylic paint for the man and the shadows of the stairs. After this I will glue the printed text going down the stairs.

The description should be sufficiently clear and detailed to give the reviewer complete understanding of the final product.

2.    A mockup/dummy of the book as the final product will appear in form and content.  When the final product will differ from the mockup, the differences should be described in detail.
The differences in my mock up and the final product will be minor. In the mock up I have used cardboard in the place of book board, and cloth in the place of book cloth. The inside of the book should be extremely similar in both the mock up and the final project.

3.    An estimated, itemized budget for an edition of 20 books.  Typical items on the budget are:

Materials
10 sheets of  26×20 black text paper ($0.60ea.) $6.00
one tube of Black Acrylic paint $6.00

oh dear i have no clue what is going on with my pictures because now that I uploaded them to the website it corruped them! so as for my 2nd half of my book… i did 10 more pages which came out great! I had problems with the issue thing tried all night to solve them but i have no idea now all my files are being funny so I’m confused i hope nothing is wrong with my computer!

oh yeah and to make things worse yesterday i had a crit in a different class and now i can’t find my beloved notebook, so if anyone sees it its a little black book that has my name in pen on the inside of the front cover!!!!

I think I’m half way there…then again maybe not

ok so here are my first ten pages of my 20 pager scanned and what I think to be done. anyways because I wasn’t in class I am unsure of them so give me some comments if you have the time.

My book is going to a book about the number twenty and the transition my of acquired from the time I was born til now. So it is everything I know about the number 20 in the order that I learned it. I think its a good idea if I’m on the wrong track let me know.

My Thoughts on the Vamp and Tramp website

The Vamp and Tramp website is owened by Bill and Vicky Stewart of Birmingham, AL. Being book collectors them selves, they really know the value of a book. On thier site they split up all of the books by catiagorys such as, New Arrivals, Fine Press and Artist Books, Broadsides, Miniature Books, Resource Books, and thier newest online catalog Last Copy Books. In this new catalog of Last Copys they feature books such as Miriam Schaer’s Book “We are Happy To Serve You” In this book, Schaer writes about her four day career as a waitress after completing art school. the book uses an apran as a cover. this book seems really interesting and I even thought about buying it…until i saw the price!!! because this is the last copy ever Vamp and Tramp is selling it for $700.00!!! yes i said it 700 bucks! I never knew that just a book could cost that much!  Then as I was looking through some of the other books, I found that this price was about average! (p.s. I’m not sure if its me ofr if this type looks funny, sadly I don’t know how to fix it) Then I thought to myself, maybe it is just because they are last copys, so I when to look at the artist book section  and was shocked to find that there was not much difference in the prices here eather! wow I never knew that one could actualy make a career out of this! I just thought that book arts was something MIAD made up so that they could make another ellective course! So in visiting Vamp and Tramp I found that, Book Arts is not something made up by MIAD and that people will pay wayyy to much money on a book. so that was my take on it, comment if you disagree.
